1 of 4 in Ehime Prefecture

Matsuyama (松山), the largest city on Shikoku and capital of Ehime Prefecture, is a delightful blend of history and natural beauty. At its center, Matsuyamajo stands proudly, an original hilltop castle offering stunning views of the city and the Seto Inland Sea. This historic landmark invites visitors to explore its architecture and experience the rich past of the region.

Famed as the backdrop of Natsume Soseki's classic novel "Botchan," Matsuyama captures the essence of Japan's Meiji Restoration era. The story has elevated the city's status across Japan, drawing literature enthusiasts. Just outside the city, Dogo Onsen, one of Japan's oldest hot spring resorts, enchants visitors with its traditional charm and serene atmosphere, making it a must-visit destination for relaxation and cultural immersion.

Getting around

In Matsuyama, the city has two main stations: JR Matsuyama Station in the west and Matsuyama-shi Station, operated by Iyotetsu, in the south of downtown. The city center is marked by Matsuyama Castle, while Dogo Onsen is located in the northeast. Trams are the easiest way to get around, running between the main stations and Dogo Onsen. A ride costs 210 yen with an IC card or 230 yen in cash. Board through the back and pay when getting off.

Iyotetsu also runs buses across the city, though most tourists only need the tram. A bus from Dogo Onsen to Ishiteji Temple takes 5 minutes and costs around 230–250 yen. Buses to the airport and port are also available, with a 20 yen discount when using an IC card. Matsuyama Airport, on the city’s southwest side, is about 15–35 minutes away by bus.
