In Takamatsu, the main entry point is Sunport Takamatsu, the area around JR Takamatsu Station. It’s a lively waterfront district with easy access to Takamatsu Castle and shopping arcades that stretch through the city toward Ritsurin Garden. Attractions like Yashima and Shikoku Mura are located to the east of the city center. You can get around easily by foot, Kotoden trains, or JR trains—buses are also available, but trains are simpler to use.
Kotoden Railway connects Takamatsu to nearby places like Kotohira, with lines that pass through central areas and stop near many popular sights. Its main station, Takamatsu-Chikko, is just a short walk from JR Takamatsu Station. While JR trains are less useful for city travel, they do connect to Ritsurin Garden and Yashima and are covered by the Japan Rail Pass. You can use IC cards like Suica and Icoca on most trains and buses, and the local Iruca card works on Kotoden but not on JR lines. Takamatsu Airport is 45 minutes away by bus and offers flights to Tokyo and some international destinations.

Takamatsu Travel Tips
Takamatsu (高松), the charming capital of Kagawa, welcomes you to Japan's smallest prefecture with its rich history and vibrant culture. Once the main gateway to Shikoku Island, Takamatsu's port was a bustling entry point until the Seto Ohashi Bridge opened in 1988. As you stroll through the city, you'll find remnants of its former castle town and the influence of the Matsudaira Clan, who ruled during the Edo Period.
A highlight of your visit should be Ritsurin Koen, one of Japan's most stunning gardens, lovingly crafted by the ruling clan. This serene oasis, with its meticulously landscaped grounds, invites leisurely walks and moments of reflection. Takamatsu's blend of historical significance and natural beauty makes it a must-visit destination on your journey through Shikoku.
