Uwajima Travel Tips

4 of 4 in Ehime Prefecture

Uwajima (宇和島), a picturesque coastal city in southern Ehime Prefecture, is a place where history, culture, and natural beauty blend seamlessly. Located along the Bungo Channel, the city offers spectacular waterfront views and is home to one of Japan's most historically significant castles. Uwajima Castle, dating back to the feudal era, is one of only twelve original castles still standing in Japan. Visitors can explore the castle grounds and its stunning keep, which has been preserved to offer a window into Japan’s samurai past. For a deeper understanding of the city's rich heritage, the Date Museum offers fascinating insights into the Date clan, who once ruled the region and left a lasting legacy on Uwajima's cultural landscape.

Uwajima’s maritime industries, particularly its renowned pearl cultivation, play a crucial role in the local economy. The city is one of Japan’s top pearl producers, and its thriving fishing industry further reflects its coastal character. A must-try local specialty is Taimeshi, a dish of sea bream served over rice, offering a delicious taste of the sea, while Jakoten, a type of fish cake, is another beloved treat. Uwajima also has a unique bullfighting tradition, where bulls engage in non-violent, controlled matches—a rare spectacle in Japan. With its scenic waterfront views, rich cultural heritage, and distinctive local traditions, Uwajima offers a charming and diverse experience for travelers.
