Kumamoto's main station, Kumamoto Station, is located about two kilometers southwest of the city center, while Kami-Kumamoto Station, one stop north, also serves local trains from Fukuoka. Both stations are roughly a 10-minute tram ride from the city center. The city is well-served by two tram lines and numerous buses. Trams cost a flat 180 yen and connect the stations to the city center and key attractions. IC cards like Denden Nimoca, Suica, and Icoca are usable on trams and JR trains, though from April 2026, the city will no longer accept these cards on trams.
Sakuramachi Bus Terminal in the city center is the hub for most bus lines. A one-day pass for unlimited use of trams and buses in central Kumamoto costs 800 yen, while a tram-only pass is 500 yen, both offering discounts to local attractions.

Kumamoto (熊本), the vibrant capital of Kumamoto Prefecture, is a bustling city on Kyushu's west coast, boasting a rich history and a population of around 750,000. Its centerpiece is the magnificent Kumamoto Castle, one of Japan's largest and most beautifully preserved castles, renowned for its impressive architecture and surrounding gardens. 5/5 - Excellent
Kumamoto is a wonderful city that blends rich history with modern charm. The highlight of my visit was Kumamoto Castle, a stunning and historically significant landmark. Though it’s been partially rebuilt after the 2016 earthquake, it still offers a glimpse into the grandeur of the original structure, and the surrounding gardens are perfect for a leisurely stroll. The castle grounds provide great views of the city and are a must-see for history enthusiasts.
Aside from the castle, I enjoyed exploring Suizenji Jojuen, a beautiful Japanese garden that creates a peaceful retreat within the city. The local food, especially the famous Kumamoto ramen, was another highlight – rich and flavorful with a unique taste that sets it apart. Kumamoto’s friendly locals and relaxed atmosphere made it a fantastic destination to unwind while soaking in the culture. It’s definitely a place I'd love to visit again!1 month ago — by Emma -

Kumamoto offers a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. The standout attraction is Kumamoto Castle, an impressive feat of architecture, though some parts are still under restoration after the 2016 earthquake. Exploring the castle grounds and nearby gardens is a peaceful experience. The Shimada Museum of Arts and Suizenji Jojuen Garden provide a more relaxed pace, offering insight into local culture and nature. For a bit of adventure, the Aso Caldera's volcanic landscapes are unforgettable. Kumamoto's food scene, especially its famous ramen, adds to the charm of this vibrant city.
