Dogo Onsen
Dogo Onsen (道後温泉, Dōgo Onsen) is one of Japan's oldest and most renowned hot spring resorts, located just east of central Matsuyama. The heart of this historic district is the iconic Dogo Onsen Honkan, a stunning wooden bathhouse that has been a symbol of the area since its opening in 1894. Its labyrinthine interior, complete with winding stairways, multiple rooms, and bustling bathers, offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into Japan’s onsen culture. Many recognize it as the inspiration for the bathhouse in Studio Ghibli's beloved animated film Spirited Away by Hayao Miyazaki. Alongside this famous bathhouse, the area is home to other notable attractions, including Asuka no Yu, several historic temples and shrines, and the scenic Dogo Park.
The Dogo Onsen district provides a uniquely charming experience for tourists, blending history with leisure. In addition to soaking in the therapeutic baths, visitors can wander through the charming shopping arcade, where they can sample local treats and shop for souvenirs. The area exudes a peaceful atmosphere, and the Masaoka Shiki Museum offers a deeper insight into one of Matsuyama's most celebrated figures. The streets come alive as guests, dressed in traditional yukata, stroll from their ryokan accommodations, further enhancing the authentic onsen town experience that transports visitors to another time.
