From May to early November, buses run between Fukushima Station and Jododaira, with a stop at Takayu Onsen. A round trip costs 6000–8000 yen and must be booked online by 5 p.m. the day before. You can also rent a car at Fukushima or Koriyama Station.
Azuma Mountains
The Azuma Mountains (吾妻山, Azumayama or Azumasan) stretch across the border of Fukushima and Yamagata, where volcanic peaks, open marshlands, and jewel-toned ponds create a striking alpine setting. Trails lead across rugged terrain shaped by past eruptions, with steam vents and broad viewpoints appearing along the way. One of the most popular spots is Azuma-Kofuji, a small, perfectly rounded peak resembling Mount Fuji. From the nearby parking area, visitors can reach the crater in minutes and follow a scenic ridge loop with views over the surrounding ranges.
Travelers reach Azuma-Kofuji along the Bandai Azuma Skyline, a winding mountain road known for sweeping vistas and brilliant autumn foliage. Close to the Jododaira Marshlands, multiple paths branch out toward higher summits and scenic ponds such as the turquoise Goshikinuma. The loop around Kamanuma Pond offers a gentle route through grasslands and wetland scenery, while the ascent to Higashi Azuma provides a steeper, more challenging climb rewarded with sweeping panoramas of Mount Bandai and the Urabandai area.
