3 of 4 in Kanagawa Prefecture

Yokohama (横浜), Japan's vibrant second-largest city, boasts a population of over three million and is just a half-hour train ride from Tokyo. As the capital of Kanagawa Prefecture, this dynamic city offers a unique blend of modernity and history. Founded as a fishing village, Yokohama transformed dramatically after its port opened to foreign trade in 1859, quickly becoming one of Japan's major urban centers.

Today, visitors can explore its lively atmosphere, highlighted by one of Japan largest Chinatowns and charming Western-style residences in the historic Yamate district. Whether you're enjoying delicious dim sum or taking a stroll along the waterfront, Yokohama promises an unforgettable experience filled with culture and charm.

Getting around

Yokohama is well-connected with four train companies, two subway lines, and a bus network. The city's two main train stations are Yokohama Station in the center and Shin-Yokohama Station, located about 10 minutes away by train. Shin-Yokohama is also where the Shinkansen stops.

Central Yokohama is easy to explore on foot, with popular spots like Minato Mirai, Yamashita Park, and Yokohama Chinatown nearby. For convenience, the Akaikutsu Loop Bus and Bayside Blue Bus connect major attractions. There’s also the Sea Bass boat service, which travels around the bay. You can use Suica, Pasmo, or other IC cards for almost all public transport in the city.

Yokohama is a fantastic city to explore! It has a perfect mix of modern attractions and historical charm. The waterfront area, with its stunning views and beautiful parks, is a highlight. I loved visiting the Yokohama Cosmo World amusement park, and the Landmark Tower offers amazing panoramic views of the city. Chinatown is vibrant and filled with delicious food options. I also enjoyed the Sankeien Garden for a peaceful escape. It’s a great day trip from Tokyo, with lots to do for all ages! Highly recommend visiting!
