Tohoku Region
The Tohoku Region (東北地方, Tōhoku Chihō) spans the northern part of Honshu, Japan’s main island, and consists of six prefectures. Renowned for its rural charm, Tohoku features vast landscapes, traditional villages, lush rice fields, and serene lakes nestled among forested mountains. It’s a region where you can slow down and embrace Japan’s natural rhythm, with soothing hot springs and warm local hospitality.
Tohoku is also one of the snowiest regions in Japan, transforming into a winter wonderland during the colder months. Its Pacific coastline—dramatically reshaped by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami—now stands as a powerful symbol of resilience and recovery. With its crystal-clear lakes, steaming onsen, and fresh regional cuisine, including some of Japan’s finest rice, Tohoku offers travelers a deep and authentic glimpse into the country’s quieter, more contemplative side.
