Hakodate Travel Tips
Hakodate (函館), located at the southern tip of Hokkaido, is the island’s third-largest city, offering visitors stunning panoramic views from Mount Hakodate. Whether visiting during vibrant summer or snowy winter, the city’s breathtaking scenery remains a constant draw. For food enthusiasts, Hakodate is a culinary haven, especially known for its fresh seafood. The city’s morning market is a must-see, where you can sample local delicacies like squid and crab, giving you a taste of the region’s maritime bounty.
With a rich history as one of Japan's first ports open to international trade, Hakodate boasts a fascinating blend of Japanese and Western influences. The former foreign residential district stands as a testament to the city’s multicultural past, with charming European-style buildings and old consulates to explore. A short drive north leads to Onuma Park, a picturesque quasi-national park dotted with tranquil lakes and walking trails, providing the perfect escape into nature. It’s an ideal stop for anyone traveling between Hakodate and Sapporo, offering a peaceful contrast to the city’s bustling atmosphere.
