Beppu (別府) is world-renowned as one of Japan's premier hot spring resorts, famous for producing more hot spring water than any other location in the country. Visitors flock to this vibrant city to experience an array of thermal baths designed to pamper and rejuvenate the body. The diverse bathing options include traditional hot water baths, such as Takegawara Onsen, which is known for its nostalgic charm and historical significance, as well as invigorating mud baths at Hyotan Onsen that offer both skin benefits and relaxation. For something unique, Beppu also offers soothing sand baths at Beppu's famous sand bath at Takegawara Onsen, where visitors are buried in warm, mineral-rich sands, and steam baths, like those at Shibaseki Onsen, that promote deep relaxation. These treatments provide a one-of-a-kind wellness experience, making Beppu an essential destination for those seeking rejuvenation and tranquility.

In addition to its hot spring offerings, Beppu is home to the famous 'Hells of Beppu' (地獄, jigoku), a striking collection of hot springs that are more for sightseeing than bathing. These natural geothermal wonders, including Chinoike Jigoku (the 'Blood Pond Hell'), with its vividly red-colored waters, and Oniishibozu Jigoku, known for its mud bubbles, provide a breathtaking display of the region's volcanic activity. The Hells of Beppu, with their vibrant colors and otherworldly landscapes, offer visitors a glimpse into the raw power of nature, showcasing the incredible geological features that make the area so unique. Other notable spots include Umi Jigoku ('Sea Hell'), which features a stunning blue pond, and Tatsumaki Jigoku, home to a geyser that erupts every 30-40 minutes.

Getting around

Beppu’s attractions are spread out across the city and are easiest to explore by rental car or bus. There are two main bus companies: Kamenoi Bus and Oita Kotsu. Kamenoi Bus covers most places in Beppu, excluding Takasakiyama Monkey Park and Umitamago Aquarium. They offer 1-day and 2-day unlimited passes for 1,100 yen and 1,700 yen, which cover most central Beppu sites.

Oita Kotsu buses go to the monkey park, aquarium, and Oita Airport. The Kitahama bus terminal is a 5-10 minute walk from Beppu Station, where highway and airport buses stop. Beppu Port, with ferries to Shikoku and Osaka, is 10 minutes away by bus. Oita Airport is 50 minutes away by bus, with a fare of 1,600 yen.
