Okinawa Region
Okinawa (沖縄県, Okinawa-ken), Japan’s southernmost prefecture, is a tropical paradise made up of small islands stretching from Kyushu to Taiwan. With warm temperatures year-round and vibrant coral reefs, it’s a top destination for snorkeling, scuba diving, and nature lovers. The prefecture is divided into three island groups — the Okinawa Islands, Miyako Islands, and Yaeyama Islands — each offering its own distinct charm.
Once the center of the Ryukyu Kingdom, Okinawa has a unique culture, language, and cuisine that set it apart from mainland Japan. Despite past efforts to assimilate, Ryukyuan culture continues to thrive and remains a major draw for visitors. The islands are also steeped in history, having been the site of one of the fiercest battles of World War II. Today, while Okinawa still hosts U.S. military bases, it is celebrated for its rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and laid-back island atmosphere.
