Recommended
2 of 4 in Ehime Prefecture

Uchiko (内子), a charming town in Ehime Prefecture, lies just 40 kilometers southwest of Matsuyama. Once a thriving hub for wax and paper production, Uchiko now offers a nostalgic glimpse into traditional rural Japan. The Kamihaga Residence, one of its main attractions, lets visitors explore the town's historical connection to the wax industry.

In Uchiko's preserved Yokaichi Old Town, visitors can wander streets lined with beautifully preserved houses that retain their 100-year-old charm from the days of the wax trade. Outside this old district, Uchiko-za, a grand kabuki theater, captivates with trap doors, hidden entrances, and a rotating stage, immersing guests in Japan's theatrical heritage.
