Kagoshima Travel Tips

3 of 5 in Kagoshima Prefecture

Kagoshima (鹿児島), the southernmost major city on Kyushu and the capital of Kagoshima Prefecture, radiates a distinctive charm often likened to its Italian sister city, Naples. Known for its mild subtropical climate, palm-lined boulevards, and the dramatic presence of Mount Sakurajima — an active volcano that echoes the fiery spirit of Italy’s Mount Vesuvius—Kagoshima offers a captivating blend of natural beauty and vibrant urban life. The city’s rich history is deeply rooted in the legacy of the powerful Shimazu clan, whose influence shaped much of Japan’s modernization during the Meiji Restoration. Visitors can explore historic landmarks, traditional cuisine, and lively markets that reflect Kagoshima’s warm hospitality and enduring cultural heritage.

Beyond the city’s bustling streets, Kagoshima serves as a gateway to unforgettable adventures across the region. Nature lovers can venture to the Kirishima Mountains, famed for their volcanic landscapes and hiking trails, or explore the scenic coastline of the Satsuma Peninsula. Kagoshima is also the launching point for ferries to the remote and enchanting islands of Yakushima and Amami Oshima, where ancient forests, pristine beaches, and unique wildlife await discovery. Whether you’re delving into the city’s historic past or immersing yourself in the breathtaking natural surroundings, Kagoshima promises an enriching and unforgettable travel experience.

Getting around

Kagoshima has two main train stations—Kagoshima Chuo (the primary hub) and Kagoshima Station (smaller, located on the opposite side). The downtown area, Tenmonkan, lies between them and is easily accessible by tram. Two tram lines connect both stations and major spots, with a flat fare of 170 yen per ride. In March 2025, Senganen Station opened, making visits to Senganen Garden more convenient. For areas not served by trams or trains, buses are available, including the City View Bus, which loops through top tourist spots for 230 yen per ride or 600 yen for a day pass.

Tourists can also purchase the Cute Pass, which offers unlimited rides on trams, key city buses, the Sakurajima Ferry, and more—priced at 1,300 yen for one day or 1,900 yen for two days. Kagoshima Airport is located outside the city and is best reached via airport buses (40–60 minutes, 1,400 yen) that stop at major areas such as Chuo Station and Tenmonkan. Ferries operate from four terminals in Kagoshima Port to destinations like Sakurajima, Yakushima, and Okinawa Island. Regular buses and the Port Liner connect these ferry terminals with Chuo Station and Tenmonkan, ensuring smooth and convenient access to the islands.
