Dogo Onsen Honkan
Dogo Onsen Honkan (道後温泉本館, Dōgo Onsen Honkan) is an iconic symbol of Japan’s oldest hot spring, dating back to 1894. This enchanting wooden bathhouse, with its labyrinth of stairways and serene tatami rooms, is believed to have inspired Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away. Visitors can enjoy two gender-separated stone baths—Kami no Yu (Bath of the Gods) and Tama no Yu (Bath of the Spirits)—offering a traditional and peaceful bathing experience. These baths immerse guests in an atmosphere of calm and timelessness, making it feel as though they've stepped into another era. On the second and third floors, spacious communal and private rooms await, providing a perfect escape for relaxation and refreshments between baths, enhancing the overall tranquil experience.
Dogo Onsen Honkan is also rich in imperial history. In 1899, a special section called Yushinden was built exclusively for the Imperial Family, and it is now open for guided tours, offering a glimpse into the luxurious bathing practices of the Japanese royals. On the second floor, a small exhibition showcases historical documents and traditional wooden bath tickets, offering visitors a window into the past. Guests will also find statues and paintings of a heron, symbolizing the legend of a wounded bird healed by the therapeutic waters of Dogo Onsen. Whether it's the bathhouse’s cultural charm, luxurious bathing experience, or deep historical significance, Dogo Onsen Honkan remains a must-visit destination for anyone seeking to experience Japan’s timeless bathing tradition.
