Kanazawa Travel Tips
Kanazawa (金沢), once the powerful stronghold of the Maeda Clan during the Edo Period, is a city steeped in history and culture, rivaling Kyoto and Edo (Tokyo). Its prominence as a major center for rice production and the vast size of its fief contributed to its cultural flourishing. Remarkably spared from the devastation of World War II, Kanazawa has retained much of its historical charm, offering visitors a glimpse into Japan's feudal past. Notable sites, such as the Nagamachi samurai district and the atmospheric chaya entertainment areas, showcase the traditional lifestyles and customs of the Edo period, transporting visitors back in time.
As the capital of Ishikawa Prefecture, Kanazawa harmoniously blends ancient history with modern attractions. The city's crown jewel is Kenrokuen, often cited as one of Japan's "three best landscape gardens." With its meticulously landscaped grounds, tranquil ponds, and ever-changing seasonal beauty, Kenrokuen captivates visitors throughout the year. Kanazawa is also home to contemporary museums and vibrant districts, offering a comprehensive experience that seamlessly integrates Japan’s cultural heritage with its natural beauty.
Getting around
Kanazawa's city center is focused around Kanazawa Castle Park, with most of the city's attractions located within a two-kilometer radius, making it easy to explore on foot. For those who prefer not to walk, buses and taxis are also available.
Kanazawa Station is about two kilometers from the city center, just a short ten-minute bus ride away. The Hokutetsu bus network connects the station to the city's main sights. A convenient option for tourists is the Kanazawa Loop Bus, which runs every 15 minutes and costs 210 yen per ride. A 1-day pass, priced at 800 yen, offers unlimited travel on the loop buses and other local buses, plus discounts at some attractions. The pass can be purchased at ticket offices at Kanazawa Station.

Walking through Higashi Chaya District felt like stepping back in time, and the 21st Century Museum added a modern touch to the experience. Whether it’s gold leaf ice cream or the fresh seafood at Omicho Market, Kanazawa has something special for everyone!7 months ago — by Emma
