Shodoshima Island Travel Tips
Shodoshima (小豆島, Shōdoshima), the second-largest island in the Seto Inland Sea, is a captivating destination steeped in myth and natural beauty. Known as the "small bean island" for its historical association with the azuki bean, Shodoshima is now renowned for its thriving olive plantations, which are the oldest in Japan, as well as its traditional soy sauce production. The island offers visitors a Mediterranean-like atmosphere with stunning beaches, luxurious resorts, and breathtaking coastal views. In addition to its coastal allure, Shodoshima is home to the majestic Kankakei Gorge, one of Japan’s most famous gorges, where lush landscapes and dramatic cliffs create a perfect setting for hiking and nature walks.
Culturally rich, Shodoshima also serves as a vibrant hub for contemporary art, hosting the Setouchi Triennale art festival. Throughout the year, impressive art installations can be found across the island, blending seamlessly with the natural surroundings. Many of these works are located in picturesque port towns along the southern coast, offering visitors a unique fusion of art and scenery. From the charming olive trees dotting the landscape to the lively art scene, Shodoshima offers a perfect blend of relaxation and discovery, making it an unforgettable destination for both art enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
Getting around
On Shodoshima Island, towns and ports are scattered along the coast, while the inland area is mostly mountainous. The island is about 20 km wide and is the second largest in the Seto Inland Sea. It has several ferry ports and is well connected to Shikoku, Honshu, and nearby islands. The largest town is Tonosho, located on the west side, and Tonosho Port offers the most frequent ferries, especially from Takamatsu and Okayama.
Getting around the island is easiest by rental car, which you can find at Tonosho Port and a few other spots. Buses connect the main coastal areas and run frequently along the southern coast, but bus service is limited in other areas. Some places, like the Choshikei Monkey Park, aren’t served by bus at all. You can also rent bicycles at Tonosho Port for about 1000 yen per day. During the Setouchi Triennale, two special bus routes will operate a few times a day (500 yen per ride) to help visitors reach art sites around the island.
