The Dogo Onsen Festival (道後温泉まつり), celebrated annually starting on March 19th, honors the rich cultural heritage of the iconic Dogo Onsen. For three days, the area surrounding the onsen transforms into a lively spectacle, with lanterns lighting the streets and red pinstripes adorning the buildings. The atmosphere is festive and intimate, offering a peaceful contrast to its autumn counterpart. Traditional parades take place, featuring participants dressed in historical costumes, as well as local geisha performing traditional games. One of the festival's highlights is the special women-led omikoshi procession, where female participants carry portable shrines through the streets. Children dressed in yukata also join in the celebrations, waving ceremonial towels as they dance, bringing the spirit of the community to life.

Beyond the cultural performances, the Dogo Onsen Festival offers a vibrant market showcasing local produce and traditional foods. Visitors can enjoy various activities, including mochi throwing and live music, as the parade winds its way through Dogo Station and the bustling shopping arcade. The festival’s connection to iconic figures such as Natsume Sōseki, Studio Ghibli, and the Japanese Imperial Family further enhances the charm of Dogo Onsen, making it a must-visit destination for those seeking a deeper understanding of Japan’s cultural and historical roots.
