Dogo Onsen Festival

The Dogo Onsen Festival (道後温泉まつり), celebrated annually starting on March 19th, honors the rich cultural heritage of the iconic Dogo Onsen. For three days, the area surrounding the onsen transforms into a lively spectacle, with lanterns lighting the streets and red pinstripes adorning the buildings. The atmosphere is festive and intimate, offering a peaceful contrast to its autumn counterpart. Traditional parades take place, featuring participants dressed in historical costumes, as well as local geisha performing traditional games. One of the festival's highlights is the special women-led omikoshi procession, where female participants carry portable shrines through the streets. Children dressed in yukata also join in the celebrations, waving ceremonial towels as they dance, bringing the spirit of the community to life.
