Matsuyama Castle (松山城, Matsuyamajō), one of Japan’s twelve original castles, sits proudly atop Mount Katsuyama, offering stunning views of Matsuyama City and the Seto Inland Sea. Built between 1602 and 1628, this historic landmark boasts a rich feudal heritage and a three-storied main keep, reconstructed in 1820 after the original was struck by lightning. Visitors can explore its well-defended gates, turrets, and wings, all set amid cherry blossoms that bloom in late March to early April.

The castle is easily accessible via a scenic ropeway or chairlift, or by a 15-minute climb. At its base lies the Ninomaru Garden, which preserves the layout of the former lord’s palace, now a tranquil park with green spaces and ponds. Matsuyama Castle is located on a hill in central Matsuyama and is easily reached by ropeway or chairlift. The lower ropeway station is a five-minute walk from the Okaido tram stop, near the covered arcade.

You can reach Okaido in 10 minutes by tram line 5 from JR Matsuyama Station or in 5 minutes by tram lines 2 or 3 from Matsuyama-shi Station.
