Matsuyama Castle (松山城, Matsuyamajō), one of Japan’s twelve original castles, stands majestically atop Mount Katsuyama, offering breathtaking panoramic views of Matsuyama City and the Seto Inland Sea. Built between 1602 and 1628, the castle is a testament to Japan’s feudal history, with its three-storied main keep, which was reconstructed in 1820 after the original structure was struck by lightning. Visitors can explore the castle's well-preserved features, including its defensive gates, turrets, and wings, all surrounded by the beauty of cherry blossoms that bloom in late March to early April. The combination of historical architecture and seasonal beauty makes the castle a picturesque destination.

The castle is easily accessible through a scenic ropeway or chairlift ride, or for those feeling adventurous, by a 15-minute climb up the mountain. At the base of the castle lies the Ninomaru Garden, a beautifully preserved area that reflects the layout of the former lord’s palace. Now a peaceful park, the garden features lush green spaces, serene ponds, and traditional landscaping, providing visitors with a tranquil retreat. Matsuyama Castle offers a rich and immersive experience into Japan’s feudal past, combining history, natural beauty, and the charm of its well-maintained grounds.
