Narita Travel Tips

2 of 3 in Chiba Prefecture

Narita (成田), located in Chiba Prefecture roughly 60 kilometers east of central Tokyo, is often associated with Narita International Airport—one of Japan’s busiest gateways for international travel. However, beyond its role as a transit hub, Narita is a surprisingly rich destination with historical charm and cultural depth. Ideal for travelers with layovers or a few spare hours before or after a flight, the city offers an inviting glimpse into traditional Japan just minutes from the terminals.

The centerpiece of Narita is Naritasan Shinshoji Temple, a revered Buddhist temple founded over 1,000 years ago. Visitors can explore its expansive grounds, serene pagodas, and ornate halls surrounded by lush greenery. Just outside the temple lies Naritasan Omotesando, a vibrant old-style street lined with wooden shops, sweet stalls, and eel restaurants serving local specialties. With its mix of spirituality, heritage, and hospitality, Narita makes for a rewarding short excursion that feels far removed from the bustle of international travel.

Getting around

In Narita, visitors can enjoy a mix of cultural sites and convenient transportation options. Local buses, mainly operated by Chiba Kotsu, connect the city center to nearby attractions such as Boso no Mura. Trains are an excellent way to explore surrounding areas like Sawara Town, Katori Shrine, and the National Museum of Japanese History. For those who prefer more flexibility, car rentals are also available.

Narita Airport is located about 10 kilometers from the city center. JR and Keisei Railways provide direct train service from the airport to Narita Station in roughly 10 minutes. The two stations—Narita Station and Keisei Narita Station—are just a short walk apart. Many hotels in the area offer free shuttle buses between the airport and downtown Narita.
