Narita Travel Tips

2 of 3 in Chiba Prefecture

Narita (成田) is a charming city in Chiba Prefecture, about 60 kilometers east of central Tokyo. While it's best known for Narita Airport, Japan’s main international gateway, the city offers much more than just transit convenience. It’s a great stop for travelers with a layover or spare time near the airport.

The highlight of Narita is Naritasan Shinshoji Temple, a beautiful Buddhist site with over 1,000 years of history. Its peaceful grounds, traditional architecture, and nearby old-style shopping street make for a pleasant cultural escape. The surrounding area also features scenic spots and local eateries, perfect for a short but enriching visit.

Getting around

In Narita, the town offers a mix of cultural sites and convenient transportation. Local buses, mainly operated by Chiba Kotsu, connect the city center to destinations such as Boso no Mura. Trains are a great way to explore nearby areas like Sawara Town, Katori Shrine, and the National Museum of Japanese History. Car rentals are also available for those who prefer to travel freely.

Narita Airport is about 10 kilometers from the city center. JR and Keisei Railways provide train service from the airport to Narita Station in about 10 minutes. The two stations are just a short walk apart. Many hotels offer free shuttle buses between the airport and downtown Narita.
