Sawara Town

2 of 8 in Narita

Sawara (佐原) is a picturesque historic town often referred to as "Little Edo" for its well-preserved Edo-period atmosphere. Once a bustling center for rice transport along the Tone River, Sawara is now known for its scenic canal district, lined with traditional wooden townhouses, merchant shops, and kura (storehouses). One of the town’s unique features is the Ja Ja Bridge, which releases a charming cascade of water into the canal every 30 minutes. Visitors can also enjoy flat-bottomed boat rides along these peaceful waterways, offering a relaxing way to experience the town's old-world charm.

Just a short walk from the canal area is the Ino Tadataka Museum, which honors the legacy of Japan’s most renowned cartographer, who was born in Sawara. The museum showcases his remarkably accurate maps and the surveying tools he used to chart the entire country—accompanied by detailed English explanations. Sawara also comes alive during the vibrant Sawara Matsuri, one of the region’s major festivals held in both summer (July) and autumn (October). During the festival, enormous floats adorned with historical and mythical figures are paraded through the streets. Many of these intricately crafted floats are preserved and displayed at the nearby Dashi Kaikan Museum, where visitors can view them up close year-round. The museum also features videos, exhibits on float-making techniques, and historical context that bring the traditions of the Sawara Matsuri to life—even outside festival season.
