Sawara is about 20 kilometers northeast of Narita Airport. You can get there by taking the JR Narita Line from Narita Station—it's a 30-minute ride for 510 yen, and the old town is a 10–15 minute walk from the station. By car, it takes around 30 minutes using the expressway (toll is 860 yen) or about 45 minutes using regular, toll-free roads.

Sawara Town
Sawara (佐原) is a charming historic town northeast of Narita, once a lively rice transport hub during the Edo Period. Often called "Little Edo," the town preserves a beautiful canal district with traditional wooden houses, merchant shops, and storehouses. A highlight is the Ja Ja Bridge, which releases a small waterfall into the canal twice every hour. From here, you can enjoy flat-bottomed boat rides through the peaceful waterways.
Close to the bridge is the Ino Tadataka Museum, dedicated to Japan’s famous Edo-period cartographer who was born in Sawara. The museum showcases his accurate maps and surveying tools, with detailed English explanations. Sawara also celebrates one of the region’s most colorful traditions—the Sawara Matsuri festival, held in July and October. Giant floats featuring legendary Japanese figures are paraded through the streets, and some are displayed year-round at the nearby Dashi Kaikan museum.
