Katori Shrine

5 of 8 in Narita

Katori Jingu (香取神宮, Katori Jingū) is a prestigious Shinto shrine located just outside the historic town of Sawara, northeast of Narita. As the head shrine of more than 400 Katori shrines across Japan, it holds great religious and historical significance. Dedicated to Futsunushi no Mikoto, the guardian deity of military strategy and warriors, Katori Jingu has been revered since ancient times as a powerful spiritual site. For centuries, it maintained close ties with the samurai class and served as a place of worship for those seeking strength and guidance in battle. Today, it remains a respected destination for both pilgrims and visitors alike.

The approach to Katori Jingu begins along a serene path lined with stone lanterns, where visitors can explore traditional shops and small eateries near the entrance. The shrine’s most iconic features include its vermilion torii gate and its elegant main hall (honden), painted in black lacquer and dating back to 1700—a rare architectural style that has been carefully preserved. Towering cedar trees surround the shrine grounds, creating a tranquil atmosphere that encourages quiet reflection. Whether you’re drawn by its deep spiritual roots, architectural beauty, or peaceful natural setting, Katori Jingu offers a memorable and enriching experience for anyone exploring Chiba’s cultural and religious heritage.
