Awaji island Travel Tips

5 of 4 in Hyogo Prefecture

Awaji Island (淡路島, Awaji-shima) sits in the Seto Inland Sea, between Honshu and Shikoku, and is connected to Kobe by the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge—the world’s longest suspension bridge. This nearly four-kilometer structure lights up in dazzling colors during holidays. On the southern end, the Naruto Whirlpools create powerful spirals in the sea, best seen from sightseeing boats or the Onaruto Bridge above.

In the heart of the island lies Sumoto City, home to the historic Sumoto Castle ruins. Along the coast, Goshikihama beach dazzles with colorful pebbles and perfect sunset views. You’ll also find architectural works by Tadao Ando, like the serene Water Temple and flower-filled Awaji Yumebutai. Reach the island by car, ferry, or bus from Kobe, but note that public transport on the island is limited.

Getting around

In Awaji Island, the best way to get around is by car. Driving gives you the freedom to explore the whole island, including beaches, parks, and sightseeing spots. Roads are easy to follow, and there’s plenty of parking.

There are also buses between main towns like Sumoto and Minamiawaji, but they don’t run very often. Ferries connect the island to nearby ports, and cycling is a fun option along the coast. However, public transport is limited, so renting a car is the easiest way to travel.
