Honpukuji Water Temple

4 of 4 in Awaji Island

Honpukuji Water Temple (本福寺 水御堂, Honpukuji Mizumidō), is a stunning fusion of modern architecture and spiritual symbolism. Designed by famed architect Tadao Ando, the temple features an oval pool on its roof, filled with lotus flowers in summer. Visitors walk through a wooded path, past a concrete wall, and eventually descend a staircase through the pool to reach the sacred hall. The descent through water represents a spiritual journey from the everyday world into calm reflection.

The temple’s interior is bathed in glowing vermilion light, symbolizing purity and enlightenment in Buddhism. Inside, statues of Fudo Myo O and Kobo Daishi highlight the site’s ties to Shingon Buddhism. The circular main hall represents the universe’s wholeness. The best time to visit is from May to September when the lotus pond is in full bloom and the sunlight at sunset creates a magical atmosphere for photography and quiet contemplation.
