Honpukuji Water Temple

7 of 12 in Awaji Island

Honpukuji Water Temple (本福寺 水御堂, Honpukuji Mizumidō) is a breathtaking blend of contemporary design and spiritual significance. Designed by the renowned architect Tadao Ando, the temple is best known for its striking oval pool on the roof, which comes alive with blooming lotus flowers during the summer months. Visitors are guided through a tranquil wooded path, passing a solid concrete wall, before descending a staircase that takes them through the pool and into the sacred hall. This descent through the water symbolizes a spiritual journey, moving from the busy, mundane world into a place of calm and reflection.

Inside the temple, the ambiance is defined by glowing vermilion light, a color deeply rooted in Buddhist symbolism representing purity and enlightenment. The interior houses statues of Fudo Myo O and Kobo Daishi, emphasizing the temple’s connection to Shingon Buddhism. The circular main hall is a visual representation of the universe’s wholeness and unity. The most enchanting time to visit is between May and September, when the lotus pond is in full bloom, and the warm sunset light creates a serene atmosphere perfect for photography and introspection.
