Tobe House and the Minakami History Museum are about a 15–20 minute walk from Minakami Station. You can also take a bus toward Jomo Kogen Station and get off at the Kankō Kaikan-mae stop (3 minutes, ¥290); the buildings are just a short walk from there.
Tobe House
The Tobe House (戸部家住宅, Tobe-ke Jūtaku) brings the Edo Period to life in central Minakami, offering travelers the chance to step inside an authentic farmhouse preserved from centuries past. Moved from its original location and restored with great care, it features thick wooden beams, an old irori hearth, and rooms that reflect the rhythm of rural life. Visitors can explore the craftsmanship, seasonal lifestyle, and household setup that once defined everyday living in Japan’s mountain villages.
Next to the farmhouse stands the Minakami History Museum, which formerly showcased clothing, tools, and daily-use items that told the story of the region’s residents. Even though the museum is currently closed, the surroundings of Tobe House remain a peaceful cultural stop, inviting travelers to wander the grounds and imagine the traditions, work, and community life that shaped Minakami’s heritage.
