Toyama Travel Tips

2 of 2 in Toyama Prefecture

Toyama (富山) is the vibrant capital of Toyama Prefecture, located in Japan’s northern Chubu region. Once a thriving castle town, Toyama holds deep historical roots and is especially known for its long-standing role in traditional medicine production. Its heritage is still felt today through local museums and cultural sites that reflect its Edo-period importance.

Thanks to its strategic position on the Hokuriku Shinkansen line, Toyama is a convenient and popular stop for travelers heading to the scenic Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. While many pass through en route to nearby mountains, the city itself offers a peaceful atmosphere with a mix of modern comfort and rich cultural history, making it a relaxing base in the region.

Getting around

In Toyama, getting around is easy. The main transport hub is Toyama Station, which is served by the shinkansen, local trains, trams, and buses. Many of the city’s main spots—like Toyama Castle and the Glass Art Museum — are located just south of the station. The downtown area is compact, so strong walkers can explore on foot, while others can use the convenient tram system.

Toyama’s trams have six lines that pass through or start at Toyama Station. A ride costs 210 yen, and you can use common IC cards like Suica or Pasmo. If you use local cards like ecomyca or passca, the fare is cheaper at 190 yen. Toyama Airport is about 5 kilometers south of the city and is connected to the station by a 25-minute bus ride (420 yen), which also stops near the castle park.
