8 of 21 in Kanazawa

Oyama Shrine (尾山神社, Oyama Jinja) is a historically rich shrine dedicated to Maeda Toshiie, the first lord of the Maeda Clan. Originally constructed in 1599 by Maeda Toshiie’s successor, Maeda Toshinaga, the shrine was initially located on Mount Utatsu before being relocated to its current location. One of its most distinctive features is the shrine’s striking gate, designed by a Dutch architect. This gate is a fascinating blend of European and Asian religious architecture, with the first story showcasing a fusion of Japanese and Chinese influences. The upper stories, which once served as a lighthouse, are adorned with beautiful Dutch-style stained glass windows, combining both cultural and architectural styles.

The grounds of Oyama Shrine are equally captivating, providing visitors with a serene escape from the bustling city. A statue of Lord Toshiie stands proudly, honoring the Maeda family’s influence. Surrounding the shrine is a peaceful garden, complete with ponds and bridges designed to resemble musical instruments, such as harps and lutes. The tranquil atmosphere of the grounds, along with the shrine’s historical significance and stunning architecture, makes Oyama Shrine a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Kanazawa.
