Nagamachi Samurai District
Nagamachi (長町) is a beautifully preserved samurai district nestled at the foot of the historic Kanazawa Castle. The area transports visitors back in time, with its traditional earthen walls, narrow alleys, and picturesque water canals. As you wander through the district, you'll encounter private gates and the well-preserved homes of samurai families, offering a rare and intimate look into their daily lives. These homes, many of which still stand today, are an excellent way to experience the architectural and cultural heritage of Japan's feudal past.
A standout attraction in Nagamachi is Nomura-ke, a meticulously restored samurai residence that offers insight into the affluent lifestyle of the samurai. Visitors can explore rooms furnished with artifacts from the period, providing a glimpse into the opulence and customs of the era. Just a short distance away, the Shinise Kinenkan Museum provides a fascinating contrast by showcasing the lives of the merchant class, who grew in power and wealth as the samurai's influence waned. Together, these attractions offer a deep dive into Kanazawa’s rich history, making Nagamachi a captivating destination for those interested in exploring both the samurai and merchant cultures that shaped the city.

The Nagamachi Samurai District was amazing to see! Walking through the narrow streets lined with traditional samurai houses felt like stepping into Japan’s rich history. The preserved architecture really gives you a sense of the past.
The small canals in the area were another highlight—seeing the giant fish swimming around was such a unique experience! The peaceful atmosphere and the picturesque setting made this area one of the most memorable parts of my trip. It’s a must-visit for anyone interested in Japan’s samurai heritage.5 months ago — by Emma
