Takaoka Travel Tips

1 of 2 in Toyama Prefecture

Takaoka (高岡) is a historic city in Toyama Prefecture that flourished as a castle town during the Edo Period. Although the original Takaoka Castle was dismantled due to the shogunate’s “one castle per province” policy, its legacy still shapes the city’s atmosphere. The former castle grounds have been transformed into Takaoka Kojo Park, while the surrounding streets retain the elegant grid layout typical of feudal urban planning. Traditional merchant houses, temples, and preserved neighborhoods offer visitors an evocative glimpse into Japan’s past, blending history with quiet charm.

Today, Takaoka is renowned for its centuries-old metal casting industry, particularly its finely crafted bronze and copperware. This artisanal tradition, which began in the early 17th century, continues to thrive and is showcased in workshops, galleries, and museums like the Takaoka Art Museum. The city’s enduring commitment to craftsmanship has established it as a cultural hub in the Hokuriku region. Conveniently located on the Hokuriku Shinkansen line, Takaoka is an easy and worthwhile stop for travelers en route to nearby attractions such as the UNESCO-listed Gokayama villages or the scenic Noto Peninsula.

Getting around

In Takaoka, there are two train stations: Takaoka Station in the city center and Shin-Takaoka Station, located just 2 km to the south. Takaoka Station connects to local trains, trams, and buses, while Shin-Takaoka Station is served by the Hokuriku Shinkansen. You can travel between the two stations by JR train (3 minutes, 150 yen), by bus (10 minutes, 160 yen), or on foot in about 20–30 minutes.

Most of the city’s main sights are near Takaoka Station. The Takaoka Daibutsu (Great Buddha), Takaoka Castle Park, and Zuiryuji Temple are all within 1 km, and the Takaoka Historic Districts are about 1.5 km away—perfect for exploring on foot. The Manyo Line tram runs from Takaoka Station to the port area and passes by most major attractions. Short rides cost 200 yen, with higher fares for longer distances.
