The Hyakumangoku Festival (金沢百万石まつり) is an annual celebration held every June on the first weekend, honoring the history of Kanazawa and the Maeda family’s legacy. It commemorates the 1583 entry of Lord Maeda Toshiie into Kanazawa Castle, marking the beginning of nearly 300 years of Maeda rule. The festival brings the past to life with a magnificent parade, which departs from Kanazawa Station and makes its way to the castle. This vibrant procession features 2,000 locals dressed in 16th-century costumes, including samurai warriors and historical figures, with one participant portraying Lord Maeda Toshiie himself. The festival atmosphere is further enriched by traditional dancing, tea ceremonies, and exhilarating taiko drum performances throughout the streets of Kanazawa.
The festivities begin on Friday evening, when the Asanogawa River is illuminated with floating candle-lit lanterns, setting a magical tone for the weekend. The grand parade takes place on Saturday, followed by a Noh drama performance at Kanazawa Castle, which is staged by firelight to evoke the past in a truly captivating way. With its blend of history, culture, and vibrant performances, the Hyakumangoku Festival offers visitors a truly immersive experience that showcases the rich cultural heritage of Kanazawa.
