Takaoka Castle Park
Takaoka Castle Park (高岡古城公園, Takaoka Kojo Koen) is a tranquil and scenic retreat in the heart of Takaoka City, built on the historic site of Takaoka Castle. Although the castle was dismantled in 1615 under the Edo period’s one-castle-per-domain law, the park retains much of its original layout, including moats that now host relaxing boat cruises. The spacious grounds feature open lawns perfect for picnicking, peaceful forested walking paths, and over a thousand cherry trees that burst into bloom from early to mid-April, forming a breathtaking pink canopy. It’s a beloved spot for hanami (flower viewing), drawing both locals and tourists each spring.
Within the park, Imizu Shrine stands on the former inner grounds of the castle. It’s especially notable for its rare bronze torii gate, crafted using wood from the sacred Ise Shrine, reflecting Takaoka’s long-standing metalworking heritage. History lovers can visit the Takaoka Municipal Museum, which provides insights into the city’s past—though most exhibits are only in Japanese. Just outside the park, the Takaoka Art Museum features rotating exhibitions and permanent collections, including works by Fujiko F. Fujio, the beloved creator of Doraemon.
