Sugano Residence
The Sugano Residence (菅野家住宅, Sugano-ke Jūtaku) is a beautifully preserved former home of a prosperous merchant family in Takaoka, offering a rare glimpse into the refined domestic life of the Edo period. Located along the historic Yamachosuji Street—once a thriving center of trade and craftsmanship—the residence invites visitors to step inside its elegant wooden interiors, stroll through its tranquil garden, and admire the intricate home altar (butsudan). This altar, a centerpiece of the house, reflects both religious devotion and the exceptional artistry for which Takaoka is renowned.
More than just a historical home, the Sugano Residence tells the story of Takaoka’s merchant class and their influence on the city’s cultural identity. Designed with a keen eye for both beauty and practicality, the building features fire-resistant elements added after a major fire in the early 20th century—demonstrating the adaptability of traditional architecture. A visit here offers insight into Takaoka’s architectural evolution, social history, and enduring legacy of craftsmanship and commerce.
