Megijima Island Travel Tips

7 of 12 in Kagawa Prefecture

Megijima Island (女木島) is a peaceful getaway just a 20-minute ferry ride from Takamatsu in Kagawa Prefecture. Though less than four kilometers long and home to only about 150 residents, the island offers a rich blend of nature, folklore, and charm. Forested mountains rise above quiet coastal villages lined with traditional wooden homes, creating a serene setting perfect for a relaxing day trip. One of the island’s highlights is the legendary Onigashima Cave, believed to be the hideout of ogres in the famous Momotaro folktale. Visitors can explore its winding stone corridors and discover whimsical ogre statues that bring the story to life.

From the summit of the island, visitors are rewarded with sweeping 360-degree views of the Seto Inland Sea and neighboring islands. The mountaintop park is especially popular in spring, when cherry blossoms create a breathtaking display. A statue of Nichiren, the founder of the Nichiren Buddhist sect, also stands at the peak, adding a spiritual touch to the landscape. In summer, the island’s sandy beach draws swimmers and sunseekers, while cozy minshuku guesthouses offer a taste of local hospitality. Megijima is also part of the Setouchi Triennale, featuring unique art installations and exhibitions that transform the island into a living gallery year-round—making it a rewarding stop for culture lovers and nature enthusiasts alike.
