Yubatake (Hot Water Field)
Yubatake (湯畑, lit. "hot water field") in Kusatsu is one of Japan's most iconic hot spring sources, gushing over 5000 liters of hot water every minute. The water, emerging at over 70°C, flows through wooden conduits where it's cooled slightly before being sent to ryokan and public baths. Its sulfur-rich scent and the steam rising from the structure create a magical atmosphere, especially in the evenings when it is beautifully lit.
Surrounding the Yubatake, you'll find charming ryokan, souvenir shops, and a free foot bath (ashiyu) where visitors can relax. A unique sight here is the "yunohana" — mineral-rich deposits from the hot spring water — harvested and sold as natural bath salts. In the evenings, the area comes alive as guests dressed in yukata and traditional wooden sandals stroll around, adding to the nostalgic charm of Kusatsu's spa culture.
