Yonetani Residence

21 of 21 in Asuka And Sakurai

Yonetani Residence (旧米谷家住宅, Kyū Yonetani-ke Jūtaku) is a beautifully preserved Edo-period townhouse and an officially recognized cultural property. This rustic former home of the Yoneda family once operated as a metal fittings store. The building features a rare five-room living room with varying floor heights and thick smoke returns, offering a glimpse into the everyday life of the Edo era. Its unique farmhouse-style architecture and odd-shaped storehouses add to the charm.

The residence has also gained attention as a filming location for the movie Rurouni Kenshin. The gabled "kirizuma" roof, sukiya-style storage room, and kuramai-style storehouse all contribute to its timeless atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy the peaceful backyard and tour the home free of charge. Whether you're interested in traditional design or Japanese film history, this spot offers a quiet and enriching experience.
