Imaicho Town

8 of 21 in Asuka And Sakurai

Imaicho Town (今井町, Imaichō) is a remarkably well-preserved historic district, offering visitors the chance to wander through a maze of traditional alleys that evoke the charm of a bygone era. Unlike many other preserved areas in Japan, which typically feature only a handful of buildings, Imaicho offers an entire town to explore. Originally established as a temple town around Shonenji Temple, which still stands today, the area gradually transformed into a bustling merchant hub with strong trade connections to Osaka and Sakai. The town’s rich history is reflected in its architecture, with traditional homes and merchant shops lining the streets, offering a glimpse into the past.

In the 16th century, Imaicho played a significant role in Japanese history, negotiating with warlord Oda Nobunaga to secure autonomy despite early conflicts. Wealthy merchants in the town even financed samurai and tiled their roofs with distinctive red tiles. While the town's prosperity declined after the feudal era, many of its historic homes remain open to visitors, including the impressive Imanishi Residence, dating back to 1650, and the Yonetani Residence. For those interested in learning more about the town's history, the Hanairaka Information Center offers old photos and a detailed model of the area, providing a deeper understanding of Imaicho’s fascinating heritage.
