Asuka and Sakurai Travel Tips
Asuka (飛鳥) and Sakurai (桜井), located just 20 kilometers south of Nara City, are often regarded as the cradle of Japanese civilization. These areas were once the heart of early Japan, serving as the seat of the first emperors. As you wander through this historic region, you’ll encounter some of the country’s oldest shrines, temples, tombs, and archaeological sites, many of which are integral to understanding the origins of Japan's culture and spirituality. Ancient stone monuments scattered across the landscape provide glimpses into a bygone era, offering a tangible connection to the foundations of Japanese history.
In addition to its historical treasures, Asuka and Sakurai offer a peaceful, rural setting perfect for those seeking a retreat into nature. Unlike Nara, which became Japan's first permanent capital in 710, Asuka was the center of political power long before, shaped by significant cultural exchanges with the Asian mainland. The region's serene beauty, with its lush landscapes and quiet atmosphere, invites visitors to experience a harmonious blend of nature and history, making it an ideal destination for both history enthusiasts and those looking to escape the bustle of city life.
Getting around
In Asuka and Sakurai, many historical sites are spread across the countryside, making them great places to explore at a relaxed pace. Sakurai Station is a useful starting point, with access to local buses and hiking trails like the Yamanobe-no-michi. Temples such as Hasedera and Muroji can also be reached by train from Sakurai.
In Asuka, renting a bicycle is one of the easiest and most popular ways to get around. Bikes are available at major stations like Asuka, Kashiharajingu-mae, and Okadera, usually costing 900–1000 yen per day. On dry days, it’s a scenic ride through the rural landscape. For those who prefer not to cycle, the Kame Loop Bus connects most local attractions and offers a day pass for 650 yen.
