20 of 21 in Asuka And Sakurai

Shonenji Temple (称念寺, Shonen-ji) is a tranquil historical gem nestled in the heart of the traditional Imaicho district. The area, renowned for its well-preserved historic buildings, has long been associated with the temple, which was originally established as a training hall for the Honganji sect during the Tenmon period (1523–1553). Built by the influential Imai Hyoubu Toyohisa and Tsuruhisa, Shonenji served as the spiritual and cultural hub around which the town developed. As Imai-cho grew, it became intricately connected to the temple, reflecting the deep-rooted religious traditions that shaped the community.

Throughout its long history, Shonenji Temple has hosted numerous important figures, further adding to its rich legacy. Notably, high-ranking priests from the Honganji Temple visited, and Emperor Meiji himself stayed at the temple, where he first received news of the Satsuma Rebellion. Today, the temple is a Nationally Designated Important Cultural Property, a testament to its historical and spiritual significance. Though currently undergoing conservation work, Shonenji remains an enduring symbol of Nara's cultural heritage and spiritual depth.
