20 of 21 in Asuka And Sakurai

Shonenji Temple (称念寺, Shonen-ji) is a peaceful historical site located in the heart of the traditional Imai-cho district in Nara. This area, known for its preserved historic buildings, developed as a temple town around Shonenji. The temple began as a training hall for the Honganji sect, built during the Tenmon period (1523–1553) by Imai Hyoubu Toyohisa and Tsuruhisa. Over time, the town grew around it and became closely linked to the temple’s religious and cultural heritage.

Throughout its history, many important figures have stayed at Shonenji Temple. High-ranking priests from Honganji Temple and even Emperor Meiji visited here. In fact, Emperor Meiji was staying at the temple when he first heard news of the Satsuma Rebellion. Today, Shonenji is recognized as a Nationally Designated Important Cultural Property. Although it’s under conservation work, it continues to be a symbol of historical and spiritual importance in Nara.
