Hasedera Temple
Hasedera Temple (長谷寺), located in the serene mountains to the east of Sakurai, offers a peaceful retreat with breathtaking vistas. Established in 686, this head temple of the Bunzan school of Shingon Buddhism is renowned for its expansive, hillside layout, which includes over 30 individual buildings spread across the slopes. Visitors are greeted at the Niomon Gate and begin their ascent through a covered corridor leading to the temple’s main hall, a journey that involves 400 steps, each step immersed in history and natural beauty. The climb becomes particularly rewarding during the cherry blossom and autumn seasons when the surroundings are ablaze with color, offering some of the most picturesque views in the area.
At the top of the hill, the main hall offers a spectacular panoramic view of the temple’s iconic five-story pagoda, well-maintained gardens, and surrounding structures. A focal point of the temple is the imposing 12-meter tall Kannon statue, carved from sacred wood, which represents the deep spiritual devotion of the temple’s followers. The atmosphere is alive with monks, who are seen moving between the temple's quarters, maintaining a living, active presence within this ancient site. Below the temple, the charm of the temple town enhances the tranquil ambiance, creating a unique destination that combines rich history, spiritual depth, and natural beauty.
