9 of 21 in Asuka And Sakurai

The Yamanobe-no-michi Trail (山辺の道) is Japan's oldest recorded road, now a peaceful walking path that meanders through the picturesque countryside of Nara. The most popular 11-kilometer stretch runs between Omiwa Shrine in Sakurai and Isonokami Shrine in Tenri, offering visitors a chance to step back in time. Along the way, you’ll encounter significant historical landmarks, including Hibara Shrine with its rare triple torii gate and Chogakuji Temple, home to Japan's oldest wooden bell tower gate. Be sure to visit the ancient tomb believed to belong to Emperor Sujin, one of the largest in the region.

The trail winds through charming small villages, farmland, and tranquil wooded areas. While most of the route is unpaved, it’s a relatively easy walk with just a few steep spots. Visitors will find informative signs in English and other languages along the way, as well as amenities like vending machines, restrooms, and fruit stands. The peaceful rural scenery provides a striking contrast to the urban landscape below, making the hike a refreshing way to explore Japan's ancient heritage and enjoy the natural beauty of the region.
