Tanzan Shrine (談山神社, Tanzan Jinja), located in the mountains near Sakurai and Asuka, is dedicated to Fujiwara Kamatari, the founder of the powerful Fujiwara clan. Kamatari played a crucial role in shaping Japan's government during the Heian Period. Originally a Buddhist temple known as Tonomine, the site transformed into a Shinto shrine during the Meiji Period when the government enforced the separation of Buddhism and Shintoism. This rich history gives the shrine unique cultural significance, blending both Shinto and Buddhist heritage.

Visitors can ascend about 100 steps from the torii gate to reach the main shrine area. A standout feature of Tanzan Shrine is its 13-story pagoda, built in 1532 and standing 17 meters tall. The shrine is especially stunning during autumn when the surrounding foliage turns red and gold, creating a picturesque backdrop to the open balcony of the main hall. In November, the grounds become vibrant with visitors, food stalls, and souvenir shops, offering a lively atmosphere that adds to the shrine's charm.
