Tanzan Shrine

Recommended
5 of 21 in Asuka And Sakurai

Tanzan Shrine (談山神社, Tanzan Jinja) is set in the mountains near Sakurai and Asuka. It's dedicated to Fujiwara Kamatari, founder of the powerful Fujiwara clan, who played a major role in Japan’s government during the Heian Period. Although now a shrine, it was originally a temple called Tonomine, and only became a Shinto shrine in the Meiji Period when the government separated Buddhism and Shintoism.

Climb about 100 steps from the torii gate to reach the main area. A highlight is the 13-story pagoda built in 1532, standing 17 meters tall. The shrine is especially beautiful in autumn, with red and gold leaves surrounding the open balcony of the main hall. During peak season in November, the grounds fill with visitors, and the approach to the shrine comes alive with local food stalls and souvenir shops.
