Muroji Temple (室生寺, Murōji), nestled in the mountains east of Sakurai City, offers a tranquil escape, immersing visitors in both history and nature. Surrounded by dense forests, the temple’s stone steps weave through the grounds, connecting its various buildings and blending seamlessly with the natural surroundings. Established in the 8th century, Muroji is renowned for its ancient wooden structures, including the Kondo Hall, Mirokudo Hall, and Kanjodo Hall. The temple has earned the nickname 'Women's Koyasan' due to its unique history of allowing both men and women to enter, unlike Koyasan, which restricted access to men only.

The peaceful atmosphere and secluded location of Muroji make it a perfect retreat for spiritual reflection. The main cluster of buildings is situated near the Niomon Gate, and from here, visitors can climb to the five-story pagoda, the oldest structure on the temple grounds, offering breathtaking views after a steep hike. For those seeking even more solitude, the Okunoin area, located higher up the mountain, offers a more secluded part of the temple. Though it requires a bit of effort to reach, this part of Muroji rewards visitors with a deep sense of spiritual solitude, making it an unforgettable part of the temple’s rich history.
