Morioka Castle Ruins Park
Morioka Castle Ruins Park (盛岡城跡公園, Morioka Jōseki Kōen), also known as Iwate Park, offers a tranquil retreat in the heart of the city. Although the original Morioka Castle was dismantled in 1874, its impressive stone foundations remain — carefully preserved and still outlining the layout of the former stronghold. As you explore the terraced grounds and sturdy walls, you can imagine the scale and significance of the Nambu clan’s former seat of power. The absence of reconstructed buildings lends the site a distinctive sense of openness and calm, inviting slow strolls and quiet reflection amid its historical remnants.
In spring, the park comes alive as one of Morioka’s most popular cherry blossom spots. From mid to late April, the grounds are blanketed in soft pink petals, drawing both locals and visitors for festive hanami picnics. Beyond cherry blossoms, the park also features vibrant autumn foliage and serene, snow-covered landscapes in winter — making it a beautiful destination year-round. With its blend of cultural heritage, natural beauty, and central location, Morioka Castle Ruins Park is a place where history and serenity gracefully coexist.
