Downtown Morioka

6 of 8 in Morioka

Downtown Morioka is ideal for leisurely walks, with its flat terrain and well-organized streets providing a comfortable and scenic setting for exploration. Just a 15-minute stroll from Morioka Station, the city center offers a rich blend of historic landmarks, modern attractions, restaurants, and local shops. One standout is the striking red-brick building of the former Bank of Iwate, completed in 1911. Designed by Tatsuno Kingo—the same architect behind Tokyo Station Marunouchi facade — this Western-style structure impresses with its elegant details. Visitors are welcome to step inside and admire the preserved interior, which reflects the architectural grandeur of the Meiji era.

A short walk from the bank brings you to Morioka Castle Ruins Park, also known as Iwate Park. Although the original castle structures were dismantled in 1874, the imposing stone walls still trace the outline of the former stronghold. Today, the grounds have been transformed into a peaceful public park, perfect for walking and picnicking. In spring, it becomes one of the city's most popular cherry blossom viewing spots, with peak bloom typically occurring in mid to late April. Just nearby stands one of Morioka’s most iconic sights—the Rock-breaking Cherry Tree. Over 400 years old, this resilient tree famously grows from a crack in solid granite, symbolizing the quiet strength and enduring spirit of the city.
