Rock-breaking Cherry Tree (Ishiwarizakura)
The Rock-breaking Cherry Tree (石割桜, Ishiwarizakura) in Morioka is a remarkable natural wonder — a cherry tree that has grown straight out of a massive granite boulder. Estimated to be over 400 years old, this resilient tree continues to bloom each spring, flourishing in a place where life seems nearly impossible. Located on the grounds of the Morioka Courthouse, its delicate pink blossoms emerging from solid stone create a striking and unforgettable sight.
Just a short walk from landmarks like the former Morioka Bank building and the ruins of Morioka Castle Park, the tree is easy to visit as part of a city stroll. Designated a national natural monument, it’s one of Morioka’s most iconic photo spots and a popular destination during cherry blossom season in April. Whether you're a nature lover, photographer, or casual visitor, the Rock-breaking Cherry Tree offers a moment of quiet beauty and a unique glimpse into the natural and cultural heritage of the region.
