Rock-breaking Cherry Tree (石割桜, Ishiwarizakura) in Morioka is a rare natural wonder, with a cherry tree dramatically emerging from a giant granite boulder. Around 400 years old, this tree continues to bloom every spring in a place where life seems impossible—on the grounds of the Morioka Courthouse. The sight of delicate blossoms sprouting from solid rock is both breathtaking and symbolic of nature’s strength.

Located close to Morioka’s former bank building and the historic castle park, the tree is easy to visit during a walk through the city. This natural monument stands proudly as one of Morioka’s most iconic sights, drawing photographers and curious visitors year-round. Its resilience has become a symbol of hope and beauty in northern Japan.
