The northern entrance to Uwajima Castle is a 10-15 minute walk from Uwajima Station or just a 2-minute walk from the Uwajima Bus Center. From there, it takes another 10-15 minutes to reach the main keep.

Uwajima Castle
Uwajima Castle (宇和島城) is a remarkable historical site, one of the twelve original castles remaining from Japan's Edo period. Built in the early 17th century, the castle was later renovated by the Date family in 1615. Perched on a hill that once offered sweeping views of the sea, the castle now sits inland due to land reclamation over the centuries. Visitors can enjoy a scenic walk up stone steps through a serene forest, creating a peaceful atmosphere as they approach the castle. The ascent leads to the main keep, which retains its authentic wooden interior. It offers a glimpse into Japan's feudal past. Once at the top, visitors are treated to breathtaking panoramic views of Uwajima City, allowing them to admire both the castle's historical beauty and the surrounding landscapes.
Along the way to the keep, visitors can stop by the Yamazato Soko, an old storehouse turned small museum. Originally built in 1845, this charming site houses a variety of historical artifacts, including festival props, old tools, and a traditional rickshaw. The climb to the three-story keep takes about 10–15 minutes, where the main attraction awaits: a fascinating collection of historical armor, swords, and portraits of the feudal lords who once governed the region. These displays offer a deep dive into the rich history of Uwajima and the powerful families that shaped its past.
