Date Museum
The Date Museum (伊達博物館, Date Hakubutsukan) offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich history of the Date Clan, who ruled over Uwajima for more than 250 years during the Edo Period. The museum showcases the rise of Uwajima under the leadership of the Date family, beginning with Date Hidemune, the first lord from the main branch of the powerful Date Clan in Sendai. The exhibits show how the city flourished under the Date family's rule, providing an in-depth look at the region's political, cultural, and economic development during this period.
Inside the museum, visitors can explore a vast array of artifacts that belonged to the Date family, including weapons, scroll paintings, family crests, and everyday items that offer a personal look at their lifestyle. One of the highlights of the collection is a remarkable assortment of folding screens (byobu), displaying intricate artwork and historical scenes. Additionally, the museum features old maps of Uwajima, offering valuable insight into the city's transformation, particularly the waterfront area, which was reshaped by land reclamation projects. This combination of artifacts and visual history paints a vivid picture of Uwajima's development under the Date family's rule.
