From Beppu, you can take a ferry to Yawatahama (3 hours, about 4,000 yen, every 3–4 hours). From the ferry terminal, walk 20 minutes to Yawatahama Station, then take a train to Uwajima—30 minutes by limited express (1,500–2,000 yen) or 1 hour by local train (740 yen).
