Mount Yoshino (吉野山, Yoshinoyama) in Nara Prefecture is one of Japan’s most famous cherry blossom destinations, renowned for its stunning display of over 30,000 cherry trees, predominantly of the Yamazakura variety. The blossoms begin to appear in late March and continue into mid-April, gradually progressing upwards through four scenic zones: Shimo Senbon (lower), Naka Senbon (middle), Kami Senbon (upper), and Oku Senbon (inner). Due to the mountain’s elevation, each zone reaches full bloom at slightly different times, allowing visitors to enjoy the sakura season for several weeks. This extended blooming period allows visitors to enjoy the beauty of cherry blossoms at different stages throughout the mountain.

Visitors can start their journey at Yoshino Station, where they can take the Yoshino Ropeway or enjoy a scenic hike up the slope lined with cherry trees. The Naka Senbon area is the heart of the town, filled with shops, inns, and historical temples such as Kinpusenji and Yoshimizu Shrine, both offering views of the iconic mountain landscape. As visitors ascend to Kami Senbon, the Hanayagura View Point provides a tranquil spot to take in panoramic vistas of the surrounding area. For those visiting later in the season, Oku Senbon remains a prime location for late bloomers, with the Takagiyama Observation Deck offering spectacular views of the lingering sakura blossoms.
