Mount Yoshinoyama
Mount Yoshino (吉野山, Yoshinoyama) in Nara Prefecture is one of Japan’s most iconic cherry blossom spots, with over 30,000 cherry trees, mostly of the Yamazakura variety. Blossoms start to bloom in late March and last into mid-April, progressing upward across four scenic zones: Shimo Senbon (lower), Naka Senbon (middle), Kami Senbon (upper), and Oku Senbon (inner). Because of the mountain’s elevation, each area reaches full bloom at slightly different times, giving visitors a chance to enjoy sakura over several weeks.
Starting at Yoshino Station, travelers can ride the Yoshino Ropeway or hike up the slope lined with cherry trees. The Naka Senbon area is the heart of the town, home to shops, inns, and temples like Kinpusenji and Yoshimizu Shrine, which offers a famous mountain view. Higher up in Kami Senbon, the peaceful Hanayagura View Point offers breathtaking scenery. Late bloomers can still enjoy blossoms in Oku Senbon, especially at the Takagiyama Observation Deck.
