Yoshimizu Shrine (吉水神社, Yoshimizu Jinja), nestled in the Naka Senbon area of Mount Yoshino, is a historical treasure surrounded by stunning cherry blossoms every spring. Originally founded in the 8th century as a temple for Shugendo monks, the shrine later became a refuge for important historical figures, including Minamoto Yoshitsune. The warrior sought shelter here during his flight from the Heike clan in the 12th century, making the shrine a significant site in Japan’s feudal history. Over the centuries, it continued to serve as both a sanctuary and a spiritual center.

In the 14th century, the shrine briefly became the Imperial Palace for Emperor Go-Daigo, who established the Southern Court in Yoshino. His spirit is still honored there today, adding to the shrine's spiritual significance. In the 16th century, it also attracted Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who hosted lavish cherry blossom viewing parties. Following the Meiji Period, the shrine was converted into a Shinto site, and today visitors can explore historical treasures such as weapons, scrolls, and artwork. It also offers one of the best panoramic views of Yoshino’s cherry-covered slopes, making it a must-visit destination for both history enthusiasts and nature lovers.
