Yoshimizu Shrine
Yoshimizu Shrine (吉水神社, Yoshimizu Jinja), located in the Naka Senbon area of Mount Yoshino, is rich in history and surrounded by beautiful cherry blossoms in spring. Originally founded in the 8th century as a temple for Shugendo monks, it later became a safe haven for key historical figures like Minamoto Yoshitsune, who took shelter here during his escape in the 12th century.
In the 14th century, the shrine briefly served as an Imperial Palace for Emperor Go-Daigo when he formed the Southern Court in Yoshino. His spirit is still honored at the shrine today. In the 16th century, Toyotomi Hideyoshi also visited the site, hosting lavish cherry blossom viewing parties. Converted into a Shinto shrine during the Meiji Period, Yoshimizu now displays historic treasures including weapons, scrolls, and artwork—and offers one of the best panoramic views of Yoshino's cherry-covered slopes.
