Koiwai Farm
Koiwai Farm (小岩井農場, Koiwai Nōjō), located just outside Morioka, is one of Japan’s most iconic and historic farms. Founded in 1891 by three visionary pioneers, it transformed once-barren volcanic terrain into a flourishing agricultural estate. Today, the farm spans over 3,000 hectares, with about two-thirds cloaked in tranquil cedar forests and the rest dedicated to open pastures, dairy operations, and visitor facilities. It stands not only as a model of sustainable agriculture but also as a symbol of Meiji-era innovation and harmony between people and the land.
At the heart of the visitor experience is Makiba Park, a spacious area where guests can relax on grassy fields, sample fresh local food, and enjoy outdoor activities like mini golf, archery, and horseback riding. Just a short walk away lies the Kamimaru Cowshed area, home to well-preserved early 20th-century buildings, working cowsheds, and a small museum that sheds light on the farm’s rich legacy. Koiwai Farm welcomes visitors from mid-April to October, while in winter it transforms into a magical landscape with festive illuminations and snowy fun from November through early January — making it a year-round destination that blends rural charm with hands-on discovery.
